Ash finds himself teamed up with a new partner in the shape of the serial killer killer, Hack, in order to find who is selling pages from the Necronomicon. But will the team up work?
I've always been a fan of the 'Evil Dead' movies and of the comic book spin offs. I'm always a bit wary when publishers do a cross over issue that combines characters from two different titles. A lot of the time the characters just clash and it doesn't really work.
I'm kind of in two minds about this title to be honest. I enjoyed it for what it was and I'm quite eager to get issue 2 to see where the story is going to go next as well as how well the characters are going to work together. I especially loved the bickering between the two of them in that Ash was his normal wisecracking self and it was started to annoy Hack by the end of the issue. I thought that was a really good touch.
However, for some reason it just doesn't work as well as it should but I couldn't put my finger on why. The writing by Seeley was up to his normal standard that his fans have come to expect. He really does seem to get the Ash character brilliantly without turning him in to a comical version of himself instead. The fast pacing of the story really works to it's advantage as well.
The art however just seems to be a little off. On some pages it works fantastically well and really makes the scenes come to life. Yet on other pages, they just seem to feel a bit rushed and messy. That's a real shame because it ends up taking you out of the story a bit just when it starts to get interesting.
All in all, while the art seems a little hit and miss, this is definitely a title worth keeping an eye on because the story really looks like it's going to heat up and get really exciting. With a hand like Seeley at the helm, you know it's going to be a good ride.
